Bruder Klaus Field Chapel
Peter Zumthor's Bruder Klaus Field Chapel was an important precedent for my thesis. The building demonstrates a connection between material and embodiment that was central to my design approach. I replicated Zumthor's method of rammed concrete around a formwork of roughly one hundred tree trucks. The technique required a custom mix of concrete with small aggregate, white portland cement and yellow ochre - which was then poured in layers and rammed every few hours over the course of three days. The building was cast in two pieces to provide a section view of the interior.
